The 7 Spirits of God [Sunday Bible Study]

The 7 Spirits of God

The seven spirits of God is a phrase used several times in Revelations, but it’s easy to pass over. Some people say it’s talking about the angels over the churches, but in Revelation 3:1, it makes a distinction between the two. So what are the 7 Spirits of God?
Revelations 1:4, 3:1, 4:5, 5:6
1:4“John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;”
3:1“And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.”
4:5“And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.”
5:6“And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.”

Now we know that if the Bible mentions something it is important, and if it repeats something it is even more so.
Isaiah 11:2-3
“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:” (We know that this is referring to Jesus)
“And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;”

The 7 Spirits of God are:

  1. Spirit of the Lord
  2. Spirit of Wisdom
  3. Spirit of Understanding
  4. Spirit of Power
  5. Spirit of Knowledge
  6. Spirit of the Fear of the Lord

Ok so now you might have some questions…

  • Does this mean there are 7 different Holy Spirits!?
  • Why does the Holy Spirit need the Fear of the Lord? Isn’t He Lord?
  • Isn’t Wisdom, Understanding, & Knowledge all the same thing?

Let’s dive right in. First things first, we need to understand that there is only one Holy Spirit. The Spirit is manifested in seven ways.
We need to jump back to Revelations 5:6 to answer the next one. If you look at the last half of that verse it says, “which are the seven Spirits of Godsent forth into all the earth.” This tells us that these manifestations of the Spirit are sent forth into the Earth for the benefit of mankind. Man needs the Fear of the Lord. The Holy Ghost does not, obviously.

Over and Over again the Bible distinguishes between wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

John 14:26

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

1 Corinthians 2:10-16

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

Proverbs 2:1-7

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.

Colossians 1:9

For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

Acts 1:8

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

In my research the verse 2 Corinthians 3:17 came up. Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

I wondered what this had to do with the Seven Spirits of God and then dad said, “Well when all seven are present in the church there’s liberty.”
